Puget Sound, WA

Puget Sound is a fascinating body of water that could occupy an inquisitive eye for days. Now its intricate details are yours to admire at leisure, thanks to this stunning 3D wooden contour map. The second-largest estuary in the United States comprises a complicated web of interconnected channels, inlets and islands, and enables salt water from the Pacific Ocean to mix with seasonal freshwater run-off from nearby watersheds. The sound was formed by receding glaciers tens of thousands of years ago, but today it sits on the northwestern coast of Washington and is dotted with cities such as Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia and Everett.

The map depicts detailed bathymetric data (“topography of the water”). Made from 8 layers of 1/16" plywood, each layer represents 228ft of water depth. Each map will be unique due to the individual grain of the wood. They are all handmade with great care and attention to detail.
